MEET SOME VERY SPECIAL PONIES & SOME VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE

USERL of Kentucky was contacted about a Pony and her colt that were in neglectful conditions.  The Pony's hooves were 8-10 inches long, curved and she was barely able to walk.  Years of neglect had taken a toll on this sweet girl.  Our hope was to save her, but were we too late?  Her owner would not fix her feet and this poor girl had to walk 200 feet to even get to some water!  Her owner refused to put her to sleep as she thought that was cruel - but how they thought this wasn't cruel, we just don't understand?

USERL was put in touch with some wonderful people.  Ann and Steve of Dragonfly Farms & Natural Hoof Care quickly came to the need of this mama Pony.  Along with USERL volunteers we met at the dark and littered filled barn where this pony called home.  She stood there in the dust filled air barely able to stand, barely able to walk.  The pain this girl was in was heart wrenching. You could see in her eyes that she was begging someone to help her. Little did she know, her life was about to change that very second.  Taking her out of the barn we witnessed the cruelty of her owners neglect as this girl struggled with each step.  Giving her something for her pain, for over an hour, Steve worked on her feet and you could smell the infection oozing from her feet.  Her colt looked on curiously trying to figure out what was happening to his mother.  When Steve finished this girl was standing properly for the first time in a very long time.  It was then time to go. Time to leave this place where she only knew pain.  As she walked all the way down to the trailer she had a bounce to her step, a light in her eyes, she was happy.  She starting eating some fresh grass and appeared to know these strangers she just met were her new family.   Loading up mama and her colt, they got some fresh hay to eat and seemed to know getting in the trailer was getting to their new lives.   Their manes and tails were also snarled with burrs and mats.  That night in their foster home, as they were put in a clean stall with fresh bedding, food and water, they were for the first time safe, and loved.  As their foster parents worked on their manes and tails, each seemed to enjoy the attention they were getting from these people who they had just met.

We will be posting updates on these two special ones. Here are some "before" pictures of them.  We will post shortly the "after" pictures of their successful rescue.

USERL would like to extend their grateful thanks to Steve and Ann for their help in rescuing these two sweethearts.  Without their help, this Pony could not have been saved. The damage to her feet was so bad, that it took someone specialized in this type of care to make her better.  The ponies will be named shortly and we will keep everyone posted on their progress.  We'd also like to thank Barb & Darlene for volunteering to assist as well!
